Dalbeattie High School claim victory in UK-wide da Vinci Decathlon

A team from Dalbeattie High School claimed victory for Scotland in a top academic contest at Ampleforth College in Yorkshire.

Facing six other teams from private schools across England, Dalbeattie ended up victorious in the first da Vinci Decathlon UK-wide competition.

The Dalbeattie students won four out of the ten events and came second in three others to take the honours.

Alistair Bremner, principal teacher of (curriculum) social subjects said: “Everyone at Dalbeattie High School is very proud of the da Vinci team’s achievements.

“They have been doing training for a very short period of time and to go to Ampleforth College and win overall is an amazing achievement. We now look forward to going to the International event in Italy in October with renewed confidence.”

The team is now looking forward to participating in the international da Vinci Decathlon hosted by Knox Grammar School of Sydney, Australia, in the Italian city of Florence in October.

The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of young school students.

They compete in teams of eight across ten disciplines – engineering, mathematics and chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and general knowledge.

The concept began at Knox to celebrate the academic gifts of Australian youth through a competition run in the spirit of an Olympic decathlon.
