Dalbeattie Foodbank goes extra mile to help households in need at Christmas

Dalbeattie Foodbank went the extra mile to help households in need over the festive period.

Dozens of Christmas parcels were delivered round doors to bring a little cheer to families.

Local businesses together with Dalbeattie and District Lions Club chipped in gifts and cash to boost the relief effort.

Demand for the service soared as Covid continues to take an economic and emotional toll on many people.

Foodbank coordinator Donna McKnight told the News: “This year has turned out to be particularly difficult for a lot of people in the community.

“The need for a foodbank to help support our community has never been greater.

“Christmas can be a joyous time of year for some. But it can also be a worrying and lonely time of year for others.

“So at Dalbeattie Foodbank we strived to provide our users with a little extra package to help them through this time.”

The foodbank’s Secret Santa appeal was a big hit thanks to the continued generosity of the community.

And the local Lions Club together with McCowan’s shop provided many gifts to be distributed to users.

Jas P Wilson provided a generous donation to buy Christmas hampers sourced and supplied by Kinnairds Nisa store.

The parcels also contained produce from TH Carson Butchers and a decoration made and donated by Dalbeattie High School.

Donna added: “Dalbeattie Foodbank will continue to run throughout the year providing food parcels for those in need.”

Organised by Castle Douglas Development Forum in partnership with Dalbeattie Community Initiative the shop is open Monday to Friday 6pm-8pm for walk-in users. For deliveries and emergencies call 07730788335.
