Dalbeattie e-bike project gets into gear in a bid to get locals more active

A new e-bike project is getting into gear in Dalbeattie.

The scheme aims to help local residents get more active.

Dalbeattie Community Initiative (DCI) have set up the initiative.

Rides on the pedal/electric motor powered bikes are staged two days a week.

According to project coordinator Tom Marshall that could rise to four as demand increases.

“We have a couple of more ride volunteers getting ride training this week,” said Parton man Mr Marshall.

“This will give us more available days for bike rides once the leaders are in place.”

The scheme was hampered initially by lockdown but is now fully operational.

Seven e-bikes are available for free hire on a pre-booked basis.

Outings on forest tracks round the town are already proving popular, said Mr Marshall, 34.

“Once people get into it they really enjoy coming on the group rides,” he said.

“It’s just as much a social thing as it is physical exercise.”

Anyone wishing to book a slot can contact Tom Marshall through DCI.

Cyclists will join rides of a suitable level for their ability.

The service is free of charge and the e-bikes are on loan from SUSTRANS.

The DCI base is behind MPG in the High Street.

More volunteers are needed so the project can be expanded and more varied rides offered.
