Dalbeattie couple plan fundraising football match in memory of lost baby

A Dalbeattie couple are planning a fundraising football match in memory of their lost baby.

Skye McAdam was born sleeping on August 30 last year.

Her parents, Ben and Jemma McAdam, are currently assembling a Skye McAdam Select of friends and family to take on Dalbeattie Star Ladies next month.

Funds raised will be split between Sands – the stillbirth and neonatal charity – and the ladies team which is currently in its first season in the Scottish Women’s Football League.

Ben said: “We’ve been trying to do lots of fundraising to support Sands in their efforts to prevent people going through the heartache that we’ve had to endure.

“A friend had suggested a charity event and the idea has snowballed from there.

“Our family recently sponsored the ladies team and their strips now feature our girls’ names so they were the obvious choice when a football match was in the pipeline and we were looking for opposition.”

The special match will be played in Dalbeattie’s Colliston Park at noon on Sunday, August 21 – almost a year to the day after Skye was born sleeping.

Teams and supporters will then head to the town’s Maxwell Arms at 2pm to continue their fundraising with activities including a raffle, bouncy castle and face painting.

And there has been a phenomenal response to an appeal for raffle prizes with goodies on offer including hotel stays, distillery tours, rounds of golf and vouchers.

Jemma said: “There are so many precious lives lost every day, preventable deaths that cause so much pain. We owe it to Skye to share her story in order to raise awareness and help others.

“The support we’ve had over the last year has been incredible and this event has been exactly the same, everyone has been so willing to help. In particular, the prizes we’ve had donated for the raffle are just amazing. The kindness has blown us away. We just can’t believe it.”

The names of Skye and Ben and Jemma’s other daughter Willow both adorn the sleeve of Dalbeattie Star ladies’ home shirts.

The team’s fundraising officer Kerry Widdowson said: “Dalbeattie is a really tight-knit community and our team were delighted to get involved to help raise money in memory of Skye.

“Ben, Jemma and Willow were also keen for us to get something out of it too so part of the money will go to the club. That will be a huge boost for us as we’re still a relatively new team.”
