Dalbeattie brother and sister complete charity running challenge in tribute to late father

A dedicated brother and sister duo have pulled on their running shoes to raise charity cash.

Colin Wilson has even become a jogging convert as he and sister Lyn Bell pounded the pavements of Dalbeattie to fulfil a promise they made to their dying dad.

The pair promised late father John Wilson - known as Jock - that they would raise cash to support a prostate cancer charity after he battled a terminal form of the disease.

But after he passed away in January, just six months after doctors told him he would not win the fight after a 14 year battle.

Colin, 41, and 40-year-old seasoned runner Lyn kicked off their charity challenge at the start of March, pledging to run three miles a day to boost funds for Prostate Scotland.

The pair, of Dalbeattie, completed the bid on Wednesday, with the final leg from Dalbeattie to the family home in Haugh of Urr - where their father lived.

There, they were met by a welcoming committee including Colin’s kids Toby and Eddy and Lyn’s children Rhys and Lucy.

Colin told the News: “I hadn’t done any running before, a bit of cycling but no running. My sister does. She’s a member of a running club but we promised my dad we would do something for Prostate Scotland and my sister asked if I thought I could manage three miles every day in March. I said I thought I could manage it.

“The first night we went out I managed it in just under 30 minutes which surprised me.”

But sawmill worker Colin has been surprised by how much he enjoyed the challenge.

He added: “My leg has started to hurt and that has held me back a wee bit but I’ve kept going.

“My sister asked if I thought we should stop in case I did myself some permanent damage but we only had two days to go and I wasn’t going to stop then.

“It’s something I think I could do more of, I have felt really good about doing it and it’s brought my sister and I even closer together.”

The duo have raised £2,000 for Prostate Scotland which supports sufferers as well as raising awareness of the disease through campaigning and education.

Colin added: “It’s been amazing. People have come up for a chat and even offered us donations.

“It’s also been a bit overwhelming for us but we have raised so much money. My dad would be over the moon.”
