Dalbeattie and District Lions Club plan special event to save group's future

Dalbeattie and District Lions are to host a special meeting in the town in a bid to save the club.

The go-ahead organisation has been a major contributor to good causes both locally and internationally in recent years.

And donations and sales at the Lions’ charity shop on Mill Street provide an estimated £10,000 of funding annually.

Current projects include helping civilians affected by the war in Ukraine.

But, according to president Lynda Burns, the club must recruit more members to ensure it can continue its valuable work.

And she hopes an informal open night in the King’s Arms Hotel on March 23 will see new people come forward.

She told the News: “There is a serious danger the club could fold. I would like people to come to our open meeting – we are absolutely desperate for members of all ages.

“We know everyone is busy with other commitments. But at the moment we have the Ukraine appeal going.

“The money we are collecting is going to Lions clubs in Ukraine to help the refugees.

“We would ask people to make time to come and find out how they can help us continue to serve our community.”

Lynda added: “It would be a loss to the town if the Lions folded and the shop shut down. We must have given out going on for £10,000 last year.

“If we get more members it means we can keep going, keep helping local people and help our community spirit.

“People of all ages are welcome to join. It would be great if some younger ones got involved.

“At the moment we have shop volunteers who are not members.

“They do very valuable work and we couldn’t run the shop without them.”

Recent Dalbeattie Lions donations include £1,000 for free-use sports equipment in the Burn Street Box set up by Paul Widdowson.

Young people have also been given cash awards towards academic study costs and trips abroad.

Lynda said: “I have said I want to retire in June. I’m doing a lot of stuff and home and hearth are getting neglected.

“Since we came up from Lancashire in 2001 the locals have been very good to us. It’s about giving a bit back to the community.”

Dalbeattie Community Council chairman Robert McGoldrick said: “I’d like to thank the Lions Club for their long lasting support to Dalbeattie.

“With the Lions Club being there for many of the events in the town and taking on one of the shops, they have been a great stalwart to all ages and groups.

“I hope they can keep up the good work.

Dalbeattie Community Initiative chairman Ian Wilbur added: “We support the work of Dalbeattie Lions Club.

“Their activities and projects have made a positive impact on our community life and the group is an asset to our town.”

The evening at the King’s Arms gets under way at 7.30pm. Anyone wanting more information can drop in to the Lions Club shop at 6-8 Mill Street, email dalbeattielions@gmail.com or contact Lynda on 07434 668946.
