Dalai Lama prays for disaster victims in Japan

FUKUOKA -- The 14th Dalai Lama attended a memorial service Thursday at Tochoji temple in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka, for victims of earthquakes and other natural disasters.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader is currently visiting Japan. The memorial ceremony was organized by SuperSamgha (the Association of Japanese Buddhists for Tibet) and other entities, and was held in honor of the victims of earthquakes and other disasters in Kumamoto and Hokkaido, and the victims of heavy rain that hit western parts of Japan and northern parts of Kyushu.

The Dalai Lama gave a speech before about 1,800 monks and the general public after chanting a Buddhist sutra at the ceremony.

"Japanese people have experienced great suffering, and I myself have been deeply worried about you," he said.
