Dakshina Kannada, Udupi get temporary respite from rain; orange alert remains

MANGALURU / UDUPI: The people in the coast, at least most parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, received a temporary reprieve on Monday as the rains let up for most of the day from 6am. There was a brief moment of sunshine too and one or two hours with a long break in between.

The red alert for the coastal districts has turned orange till Friday, indicating the rains are relenting. This prompted the DK district administration to declare that there will be no holiday for anganwadi and schools on Tuesday. “Classes will resume with all precautions. If there are any issues, a decision will be taken locally on prior approval from DDPI / ZP CEO / DC office,” said a statement from the DC’s office.

With the chief minister to arrive in the district on Tuesday, all officials are busy collecting data about loss and damages. Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai will arrive at Sullia from Madikeri around 2.30pm. After inspecting the damage in the taluks along the way, he will go to Udupi at 7.30pm. On Wednesday, he will tour the Udupi district and assess the situation due to rains. He will leave for Bengaluru at 7.45pm on Wednesday.

On Sunday, the Nethravathi river at Bantwal breached the danger level of 8.5 mts, on Monday it was a little below the danger level, but low-lying areas in Bantwal taluk, especially villages beside the riverbanks, were inundated. A huge ground level reservoir at Uppugudde in Bantwal is in danger after unscientific hill cutting has resulted in soil slippage exposing the reservoir to danger. Officials have visited the spot.

Traffic on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru national highway 75 was affected for a couple of hours after a landslide at Soorikumeru, about 30km from Mangaluru on Monday around 10am. Authorities deployed excavators to facilitate movement of traffic on one side and later cleared both the sides of NH. Many buses bound to Mangaluru were delayed due to the traffic gridlock.

In Udupi, the loss on Monday was estimated at about Rs 3.06 lakh. This includes partial damage to three houses in Brahmavar (Rs 70,000); one house in Karkala (Rs 50,000) and five houses in Kaup with loss estimated at Rs 1.86 lakh.

According to KSNDMC, two places in Udupi district received the heaviest rainfall in the state. Hallihole in Kundapur taluk received 188mm rain and Shivapura in Karkala taluk gotr 256mm rain in the last 24 hours till Monday.

A bulletin issued by IMD at 1pm on Sunday stated that very heavy rainfall amounts (in mm): Subramanya (Dakshina Kannada) 160mm; Castle Rock (Uttara Kannada) 150mm; and Kota (Udupi) 120mm. Heavy rains was recorded at Kollur, Siddapura (both Udupi), Moodbidri (Dakshina Kannada) 110 each; Basagod, Gersoppa, Shirali (all Uttara Kannada), 100mm each.

All taluks of Dakshina Kannada received excess rainfall than the average rainfall recorded for the day. The district received an average rainfall of 82mm, Udupi received 94mm and Uttara Kannada received 58mm in the last 24 hours.
