Dakota Johnson will have the starring role in Netflix's forthcoming adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion.
Overseen by acclaimed theatre director Carrie Cracknell, Persuasion is billed a “modern, witty approach” to Austen’s novel and is written by Oscar winner Ron Bass (Rain Man) and Alice Victoria Winslow.
Cracknell most recently worked on Jake Gyllenhall and Tom Sturridge’s Tony-nominated performances in the Broadway play Sea Wall/A Life.
Meanwhile, there is no release date set for Persuasion just yet, but Netflix's official description reads: “Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities.
“When Frederick Wentworth – the dashing one she once sent away – crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances.”
The Fifty Shades of Grey star most recently starred in the 2019 drama Our Friend opposite Jason Segel, Isabella Kai, Violet McGraw, and Casey Affleck.
Persuasion was Austen's final novel, completed in 1817 and released six months after her death in 1818.
It was adapted for the screen in a 2007 TV movie released on ITV. A 1995 BBC version starring Amanda Root was released in the US by Sony Pictures Classics and earned five BAFTAs.
