Dakota Johnson explains what happened to her tooth gap: 'I'm really sad about it too'

Dakota Johnson has finally explained the mystery behind her missing tooth gap.

Earlier this week, fans of the Fifty Shades actor were sent into a frenzy after they noticed the gap between Johnson’s two front teeth had closed up.

Over the years, the 29-year-old has been vocal about how proud she is of her tooth gap. So much so, that in 2017 she even made a video with Vanity Fair about the objects she can fit between her two front teeth, including a credit card, a twig and a paper clip.

On Tuesday evening, the actor addressed the confusion around the closed gap on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show, revealing that the gap closed as a result of a dental procedure and that she is just as devastated as her fans about the outcome

“Well, first of all, the fact that this is a newsworthy event in our world right now is pretty Chaka Khan to me,” Johnson told Fallon.

“I had a permanent retainer since I was like 13 and it was glued to the back of my teeth. I was having a lot of neck problems recently, so my orthodontist, she decided it was a good idea to take it off and see if my jaw sort of expanded and it helped me, and my gap closed by itself and I'm really sad about it too.“

The A Bigger Splash star joked that the missing gap means she now has to deal with a whole new set of problems, such as food getting stuck in her teeth.

“Before it would just slide right through,” Johnson jested.

But, there is a happy ending to Johnson’s tooth gap tale as the actor insisted she is working on getting the gap back with the help of other retainers.

“The world of dentistry is so advanced,” Johnson explained.

Fans first noticed Johnson’s tooth gap had gone missing at the premiere of her new movie The Peanut Butter Falcon on 1 August in Los Angeles.

Flocking to Twitter, one fan commented on the controversy, writing: “Woke up to find out Dakota Johnson no longer has her tooth gap, I’ll cry myself back to sleep.”

“RIP Dakota Johnson's gap tooth, gone but not forgotten,” another person added.

While a third fan wrote: “Someone do God a favour and Photoshop a gap in Dakota Johnson’s teeth from now on."
