After a video of Dakota Johnson shutting down Ellen DeGeneres went viral, Twitter users have now uncovered a new twist in the saga.
A clip from DeGeneres’ chat show, which saw the actress hit back when the comedian claimed she had not been invited to Johnson’s 30th birthday party, sparked discussion on social media over the weekend.
After DeGeneres asked “How was the party?” and added “I wasn’t invited,” Johnson didn’t hold back, replying with: “Actually, no, that’s not the truth, Ellen. You were invited.
“Last time I was on the show, last year, you gave me a bunch of s*** about not inviting you, but I didn’t even know you wanted to be invited,” she continued. “I didn’t even know you liked me!”
DeGeneres then replied with: “Of course I like you. You knew I liked you. You’ve been on the show many times.”
Johnson then told the presenter to “ask your producer” whether she had invited DeGeneres, prompting a voice off-camera to call out: “You were out of town.”
Twitter users have now pointed out that DeGeneres was in fact otherwise engaged at the time of Johnson’s birthday party:
The actress’s star-studded celebrations fell on the same weekend that DeGeneres was controversially photographed sitting with former President George W. Bush at a Dallas Cowboys game.
After drawing criticism when pictures were published showing her chatting and laughing with Bush, DeGeneres addressed the controversy in a segment on her show, telling viewers that it’s “OK” to be friends with “people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have.”
“I’m friends with George Bush,” she said. “In fact, I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have. We’re all different, and I think that we’ve forgotten that that’s OK.
“Just because I don’t agree with someone on everything doesn’t mean that I’m not going to be friends with them.”
