Daithi O Se bravely takes the plunge in an ice bath on first night of Rose of Tralee

The first night of the Rose of Tralee International Festival did not disappoint as it made its return to our screens on RTE One on Monday night

The Roses brought plenty of entertainment to the stage with some weird and wonderful talents being showcased.

The first live show of the annual pageant in Tralee saw host Dáithí Ó Sé take the plunge in an ice bath as well as fight the Florida Rose Jennifer Waldeck in a lightsabre battle.

Other standout performances came from the Galway Rose Clare Ann Irwin who entertained the audience with tales of her unique career choice - as a funeral director and embalmer - and the Texas Rose Arden Stringer who revealed her interesting family history.

The Kildare Rose, 26-year-old Ashleigh Byrne made Dáithí undress and submerge himself into a barrel full of ice cold water on stage to demonstrate the Wim Hof technique - which she often practices.

The breathing exercise, while submerged in extremely cold water, is supposed to bring “peace and clarity” to the mind as well as trigger “happy hormones”.

Dáithí bravely plunged himself into the freezing cold water - but only after stripping to a pair of GAA shorts first.

And people at home couldn't get enough of the Kerry man getting into the ice bath saying he was “a great sport”.

One person wrote: “The Kildare Rose getting Daithí into the ice bath is the funniest thing I've seen in RTÉ in a while #RoseOfTralee”

Another agreed saying: “#RoseOfTralee is brilliant tonight. Daithi in the ice bath was very entertaining”

And a third said: “@daithi_ose is a great awl sport #icebath #roseoftralee”

The second live show will take place on Tuesday night when a new winner will be crowned for the first time in three years as the 33 contenders from around the world find out which of them will be claiming the title of the 62nd Rose.
