Daily Record wins Newspaper of Year while Alex Salmond scoop earns David Clegg hat-trick of awards

The Daily Record was named Newspaper of the Year at the 40th annual Scottish Press Awards on Thursday night.

Your favourite paper picked up the coveted Scottish Newspaper Society’s gong at the glittering bash in Glasgow.

The Record also won Scoop of the Year after Political Editor David Clegg’s sensational revelations about allegations made against former First Minister Alex Salmond secured the award sponsored by the Scottish Newspaper Society.

David bagged a stunning hat-trick of award at the newspaper industry oscars, adding The Big Partnership’s Journalist of the Year and the Law Society of Scotland’s Political Journalist of the Year.

The Record man dedicated his Journalist of the Year award to Lyra McKee , the journalist shot dead in Norther Ireland last week.

David revealed the last time he spoke to the 29-year-old was when she called to congratulate him on the Salmond story.

And there were more individual awards for the Daily Record at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel.

Johnny McFarlane won Event Consultants Scotland’s Outstanding Digital Journalist of the Year award with Jack Aitchison taking the runner up spot.

There was a team award as dailyrecord.co.uk was named People’s Postcode Lottery’s Journalism Team of the Year for their live breaking coverage of the Beast from the East.

The Sunday Mail’s John Ferguson was named runner up in Clydesdale Bank’s Financial/Business Journalist of the Year category.
