Dail printer scandal mentioned on BBC panel show Have I Got News For You

An Irish scandal made its way across the Irish Sea last night as the controversy surrounding the cost of the new Dail printer was mentioned on Have I Got News For You.

The popular BBC panel show, viewed by over 4 million people, takes a lighter look at news and current affairs.

And one of the items up this week was Leinster House's very own Komori Printing Press.

Host Stephen Mangan said: "This week the Irish parliament's been ridiculed after reports relating to the controversial purchase of a state-of-the-art printer which was 'too big to fit in the parliament building'."

The studio guests and audience were then shown an image of the massive printer, which was received with some shock.

Stephen added "that printer cost €800,000" to more incredulity.

Comedian Paul Merton then quipped: "What did it print, money?"

Last month it emerged the total cost surrounding the issue is actually €1.629million.

A misunderstanding about the "head height" of the machine led to massive renovation costs of €230,000 (excluding VAT).

The cost of the printer and associated equipment reached a staggering €1,369,605.

Figures obtained by the Irish Mirror under the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act last month also showed Leinster House shelled out more than €2.1million of taxpayers’ money on printing and equipment in just 18 months.
