Dai Young surprised no action taken over incident which put Wales star James Botham in hospital

Cardiff boss Dai Young admits he is surprised no disciplinary action has been taken over the incident which saw James Botham end up in hospital.

Welsh international back rower Botham was laid out during last Saturday’s United Rugby Championship defeat away to Edinburgh.

He was hurt when he was on the receiving end of head-on-head contact from home hooker Dave Cherry at a ruck clear-out.

There was a lengthy delay while the 23-year-old was treated before being stretchered off on a buggy, while taking in pain-killing gas.

After being checked out in hospital, he was able to fly home with the rest of the squad and has subsequently come through further tests.

But the nine-times capped Wales Six Nations contender now faces a couple of weeks on the sidelines.

No action was taken against Cherry by the match officials and he wasn’t cited, much to the dismay of many on social media who felt it was a red card offence.

Now Cardiff director of rugby Young has delivered his verdict.

“First and foremost, I don’t think it was anything intentional,” he said.

“I don’t think he went out to try and hurt or anything like that. That’s the first thing I would want to stress.

“I don’t think for one minute it was intentional.

“But, to me, it’s always been stressed that, whatever circumstances it is, head on head tends to be a red card and I don’t think anyone could say it wasn’t head on head.

“There wasn’t real intent there, but that’s no different to probably many red cards we see with tackles.

“So I was surprised it hasn’t been looked at, but that’s not my job.”

Young added: “When we spoke to the referee, he said the TMO had had a look at it and he felt it was fine.

“I have had a message from the referee manager after the game saying they have looked at it and they feel it was fine.

“I am never ever going to be banging a drum to get people banned or out of the game.

“That’s not my job. It’s other people’s jobs to look at that.

“But we all see week-in, week-out, players getting red cards for head-on-head collisions.

“There is never any intent in it. They get the timing wrong or the position wrong and that was probably the case on the weekend.

“But I don’t think you can deny it was head on head.

“So I was surprised really there was no sanction, but that’s for other people to determine and I am certainly not ging to be chasing and advocating something is done about it.”

Giving an update on Botham’s condition, Young said: “He has had all relevant medical checks.

“He had the checks in hospital before he was released to come on the plane back in Edinburgh.

“We have also had more CT scans and MRI scans because you can never be too careful.

“He is well in himself, he is moving about, he is not restricted in any way.

“He is a bit shook up as it was a bad knock, but he is fine and there is nothing structurally.

“I am sure within a week or two he will be putting his hand up for selection again.”

Botham misses Friday night’s Champions Cup clash with Harlequins at the Arms Park and it remains to be seen whether he will be available for the final group game away to Toulouse next week.

Liam Belcher was another casualty from the trip to Edinburgh and he joins fellow hookers Kristian Dacey and Iestyn Harris on the injured list, while the semi-pros who stepped into the breach in Europe last month are not available either.

So Cardiff have turned to Carmarthen Quins hooker Torin Myhill, registering him as emergency front row cover.

He will be on the bench against Harlequins, providing back-up for his elder brother Kirby, with the siblings having previously been on the books together at the Scarlets.

Last weekend, the 26-year-old Torin played against Cardiff RFC for Carmarthen Quins.

Now he goes up against another lot of ‘Quins in the colours of Cardiff Rugby.
