Dai Young relieved of Wasps first team duties in shock announcement

Dai Young is stepping back from first-team duties at Wasps, it’s been revealed in a shock announcement.

The club has revealed that attack/backs coach Lee Blackett is taking over as interim head coach.

It’s being reported by Coventry Live that a senior management meeting was called at the Ricoh Arena this morning, followed by the players being told the news shortly afterwards at the club’s Broadstreet RFC training ground base.

Young was not present at yesterday’s media session, with defence coach Ian Costello attending instead.

A statement from Wasps reads: “Director of Rugby Dai Young will be stepping back from first-team duties for an interim period.

“Lee Blackett will step up to Interim Head Coach. Further announcements will be made in due course.”

Former Wales and Lions prop Young has been at the helm of the Premiership club for some nine years having moved from his long-time coaching role at Cardiff Blues in 2011.

Wasps reached the Premiership final in 2017, losing in extra-time defeat to Exeter. The following season they made it to the semi-finals.

But last season they finished eighth and this term they began their campaign with eight defeats in ten league and European games.

Blackett will be in charge for this Saturday’s Premiership match against Leicester at Welford Road.
