Dai Davies, former Everton and Tranmere goalkeeper, has died aged 72

Former Everton and Tranmere Rovers goalkeeper Dai Davies has passed away at the age of 72, the Everton Former Players Foundation have confirmed.

Born in the Welsh mining village of Glanamman, Davies began his career with Swansea City before joining league champions Everton in 1970 for £20,000.

He remained at Goodison Park for seven seasons, playing 82 times for the Toffees before joining Wrexham in 1977. He later returned to Swansea and spent a year at Tranmere as a player-coach before retiring in 1987.

He won 52 caps for Wales during his career.

Davies was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year and treated at the Royal Hospital in Liverpool before being moved to the Nightingale Hospice in Wrexham.

When news of the diagnosis was made public last year, it was met with an outpouring of support from across the footballing world.

Everton and Wales legend Neville Southall credited Davies with being a huge influence on his career and praised his 'incredible mental strength.

He said: “Dai had incredible mental strength and never let the odd mistake affect him. He just kept going.

“He won more than 50 caps and played loads of games at the top level and should be recognised as a top goalkeeper.

“His attitude was always spot on and he’s a great guy as well, a really funny person.”
