Dad with 'awful' driving record who tried to flee from police jailed

A man who drove at speeds of up to 70mph to evade pursuing police before trying to run away has been jailed for his 'appalling driving record'.

Garreth Robinson, 35, appeared at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court following the chase which ended when his vehicle hit a kerb on Southmoor Road, Wythenshawe on Sunday night.

Self-employed joiner Robinson, of Falcon Drive, Irlam, pleaded guilty to failing to stop for police, failing to provide a specimen of breath when suspected of drink driving, driving with no insurance, without due care and attention and driving while disqualified.

Robinson, who has a four-year-old child and another expected in January, was also in breach of a suspended prison sentence.

Robin Lynch, prosecuting, told Deputy Judge Richard Jepson that Robinson was seen by officers and, when they activated their blue lights to stop him, he accelerated away at speeds of up to 70mph.

"The car eventually hit a kerb, damaging his vehicle and [he] tried to make off," he said.

Pleading for leniency, Adrian Palmer, defending, said that Robinson had 'never had engagement with the probation service' although he was 'known to be an incorrigible driver who drives when he shouldn't do'.

Jailing Robinson for a total of two-and-a-half months, Deputy Judge Jepson told him: "You have an appalling driving record. You took police on quite a nasty chase and failed to provide a sample for analysis.

"It seems to me you are not going to stop. You've got a good work record and you have another child on the way, but all this just doesn't seem to stop you."

Robinson was was also banned from driving for four years and ordered to pay £85 costs.
