Dad whose car was torched in Swansea's Mayhill riots is given a free replacement vehicle

A dad-of-two whose family was terrorised and their car torched in the recent Mayhill riots says his "faith in humanity has been restored" after being given a replacement vehicle for free.

Thugs rolled a car down Waun-Wen Road in Swansea during a night of appalling violence last Friday, sending it crashing into Adam Romain's Honda Jazz, which they then set on fire before bricking his windows.

It was the second time the 34-year-old delivery driver's property had been damaged in recent months, the same car having been written off in March by another runaway vehicle left to freewheel dangerously down the steep hill outside his home.

However, when Ben Wheel, a port operator with the British Army, saw the shocking footage on TV he decided to help out by donating his own Vauxhall Astra to replace what Adam and his family had lost.

"I think it's amazing what he's done - it's a gesture that's really restored my faith in humanity, and it was so unexpected," said delivery driver Adam, whose panicked 999 call was captured on his motorbike helmet cam as he tried to shield his partner and children from the yobs besieging his house.

Delivery driver Adam said the gift was 'proof there are good people left in the world' (Adam Romain)

"It was the second time the exact same thing's happened to my car - the first being two months ago when someone sent a car hurtling down the road and it smashed into my neighbour's vehicle, which then collided with mine.

"This happened at about 2AM and we were woken up by two huge crashes."

However, Adam managed to buy back the write-off from the insurance company and set about getting it repaired.

"I only got it back a fortnight ago, then the riots began and the same thing happened again. This time whoever was responsible also set light to the car they rolled, which then led to mine catching fire too."

He added he'd been blown away by Ben's kindness after the 27-year-old from Fforestfach tracked him down via social media.

"He even had it valeted before handing the keys over, so it had that 'new car smell' to it - God bless his heart, so kind," said Adam.

"I made sure we took a photo of the pair of us together so I can put it in the family album to show my kids what good people look like."

But Ben insisted the decision had been a 'no-brainer'.

"After I saw the rioting on the telly I knew I had to try to help somehow - simple as that really ," he said.

"And, as I was getting a new car the next day anyway, I figured that my old one should go to someone who really needed it.

"I'd have only got a couple of hundred quid had I sold it, so it's no big deal.

"It's a good little runner that's got me back and forth work for years now, so I hope Adam gets similar use out of it.

"The bloke's been through a lot and his family are lovely. They deserve a break and to bounce back from what happened."
