Dad who targeted partner's family in crime spree headbutted police car when he was caught

A man stole a chainsaw, tools and freezer food from a garden shed before attempting to steal from his partner's uncle, a court heard.

Warren Gatley, 31, attempted to carry out a spate of burglaries on Ackroyd Avenue in Gorton in June last year.

He first stole £1,000 worth of items from a garden shed, before trying to break into another house.

He then tried to steal items from the glove box of an unlocked Transit van parked on the road before attempting to steal his partner's uncle's car stereo, Minshull Street Crown Court heard.

When he was arrested the following month, he was 'extremely aggressive' towards police officers and headbutted the door of the police car.

Gatley, a dad-of-two, has now been handed a community order.

Prosecutor Harriet Tighe told the court how in the early hours of the morning on June 29 last year, the owner of a house on Ackroyd Avenue went out to their shed to get some food from a freezer.

He noticed some food had been taken, as well as an electric chainsaw and a multi tool, the prosecutor said.

The items were worth more than £1,000.

Gatley then tried to break into another house on the same street.

The owner of the house woke up at 3am to an alert on her CCTV security camera, the court was told.

"The footage on the camera showed the defendant walking around the property and trying a number of the door handles", Ms Tighe said.

"He was trying to gain access but was unable to do so."

Gatley tried to steal items from the glove box of an unlocked Ford Transit van, then tried to remove the car stereo from another vehicle, the court heard.

The owner of that vehicle was left 'frustrated' because he knew Gatley - he was 'going out with his niece'.

On July 27 last year, the defendant was arrested at his home but became aggressive with officers.

"He was locked in the marked police vehicle then proceeded to strike the rear passenger door with his head and shoulder which caused damage", Ms Tighe added.

Defending, Simon Gurney said his client - who has four previous convictions for 10 offences - was 'deeply ashamed' of his behaviour.

"He wishes to apologise to the court today", Mr Gurney said.

"He has nothing on his record for burglary or dishonesty and nothing for the last 12 years.

"He said there was some turmoil in his life in the run up to these offences. He resorted to drinking excessively and suffers with mental health problems."

Sentencing, Judge Michael Leeming said: "This was a spate of offending.

"The probation service assessment says there is a low risk of you reoffending and you have admitted responsbility.

"The offences were not planned and you have offered no excuses for your behaviour.

"You have a partner and two children and it's felt that you can be maintained within the community.

"You're now in a much better place to where you were in June last year."

Gatley, of Butman Street, Gorton, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary, one count of attempted burglary of a dwelling, two counts of attempted theft from a motor vehicle and one count of criminal damage to a police car.

He was handed a community order for 18 months, made up of 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days and 150 hours of unpaid work.
