Dad who survived Covid-19, pneumonia and double stroke to be studied by doctors

A Covid-19 survivor who suffered two strokes, pneumonia and sepsis is to be studied by medical experts in the hope of helping other coronavirus victims recover.

Omar Taylor, 31, spent four weeks in intensive care, where he was put on a ventilator for coronavirus and developed two blood clots on his brain causing a double stroke.

His distraught wife Kaitlyn, 30, thought she and their two children, four-year-old Vivienne and two-year-old Harrison, would never see Omar again.

But the Care UK regional manager defied all the odds - and just last week, he walked off the stroke ward at Colchester Hospital in Essex, to a round of applause from the staff there.

And now Omar, who is back at home in Rowhedge, Essex, with his family, has been selected by scientists to be subject to a special research project exploring the impacts of the deadly virus.

Kaitlyn, a student nurse, said: "The doctors have asked him for his permission to research into his situation and his recovery.

"They think it will benefit other Covid-19 patients.

"Omar gave his consent, so doctors will study his medical reports and the information the hospital holds.

"We are happy to try and help anyone else. We don’t want anyone else to go through what we have, so anything we can do to stop that would be amazing."

Care manager Omar was taken to ICU at Colchester Hospital on March 22, three days after being admitted with breathing difficulties.

He spent almost a month in intensive care, including being on a ventilator, and also suffering right-sided heart failure.

But after being given the all-clear on April 18 Omar was moved to the hospital's stroke ward, and is now continuing his rehab at home.

Kaitlyn said: "Lots of people have messaged me saying seeing Omar’s story has given them hope. It is nice to see he is inspiring others.

"He is doing really good at home. His speech is not there yet but he is doing better and he has been getting a lot of therapy at home.

"We are working on three word sentences at the moment."

She added: "People have said to me seeing Omar’s story has spurred them on and said it has been nice to see a positive recovery story in the news."

Friends and neighbours have raised more than £17,000 towards Omar’s recovery.
