Dad who spent weeks on burns unit makes huge gesture to Alder Hey

A dad who stayed in a burns unit for more than a week after scalding his body with boiling hot water has gone back to the hospital that helped him.

Pete Cranfield, 38, who lives in Hoylake was around four-years-old when he was tragically scalded by boiling hot water from a kettle. His parents had just moved from Knotty Ash to Speke, with Pete saying there was "stuff everywhere".

A stool was left in the kitchen and Pete used it to climb onto the counter to get himself something to eat. But when he tried to come down he caught the cord of the kettle on his foot which had just boiled, and scalding hot water poured down his shoulder and left arm.

Pete told The ECHO : "I remember my mum and dad wrapping up my arm in cold and wet tea towels and rushed me in to Alder Hey. I remember the pain being excruciating.

"I ended up staying in there for around a week and having a skin graft on my shoulder. I remember asking my mum 'what will I do when the kids in school ask what happened' because my arm was a purple colour.

"Looking back now the nurses who looked after me were incredible."

Earlier this year Pete, who works as a barber, raised money for the hospital to give back to the "incredible" staff who helped him by shaving his "much-loved" hair off.

He said: “I always wanted my hair long when I was a kid, I would always talk about it and knew it was something I wanted to do. Because I'm a barber whenever it would get long I would just cut it off.

"When I ended up growing it somebody asked me what it would take for me to shave it off again, and I said I probably would for charity."

Pete raised almost £5,000 on his GoFundMe page and delivered the cheque to Alder Hey in person on Monday, December 19.

He said: "Being back in Alder Hey with River really hit home for me. I was speaking to this woman who was in there with her son who really wasn't well. It just hit home about how amazing Alder Hey is and how lucky we are to have Alder Hey on our doorsteps.

"I hope River [Pete's son] will never need it, but if he does I know it's there."
