A dad who campaigned for three years for his son's life support to be switched off says he feels 'torn' after his lad died when he was not there.
Kavan Maddocks, 23, from Macclesfield, Cheshire, had been kept alive with feeding and breathing tubes after falling off a multi-storey car park in 2016.
His father, Frank Maddocks, battled for his child to be allowed to die after he suffered serious brain damage from the fall, leaving him in a 'cabbage-like' state.
Staff at Stocksbridge brain injury clinic, near Sheffield, called Mr Maddocks on Saturday and told him his son had passed away after fighting a chest infection all week.
The dad told Mail Online : "They never told us he had a chest infection. Maybe if they had, we could have been there for him when he passed.
"I am torn, because in some ways, I am over the moon. I'm absolutely chuffed for him that he's finally found a way out of this lifeless hell he has been in.
"But I will always be disappointed that I had to push for three years. We had hoped the doctors would see the sense and let him go – with us all there at his bedside. But it did not turn out like that."
Mr Maddocks went to the clinic to see his son for the last time, giving him a hug and a kiss.
The father whispered 'I'm pleased for you mate' and told him he was in a better place.
Kavan, a trainee accountant, was just 20 when he fell from the car park after a night out drinking at a Macclesfield Town football match.
