Dad who beat girlfriend during hotel cocaine rampage found dead in prison

A dad who beat up his girlfriend during a cocaine fuelled rampage at a Hilton Hotel has died in prison.

Ronnie Gaunt was jailed in for 42 months in September 2019 after beating his girlfriend unconscious at the luxury Manchester hotel.

The 38-year-old plumber, from Halewood, died at HMP Risley on Wednesday while serving a sentence for GBH.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice told the ECHO : "HMP Risley prisoner Ronnie Gaunt died in custody on 15 April 2020 and our condolences are with his family and friends.

“As with all deaths in custody, there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”

Gaunt was sent to the Warrington prison after pleading guilty to the attack on his partner.

At the time, a court heard that Gaunt had taken his 25-year-old girlfriend away for a romantic weekend, bought her birthday presents and took her for a meal to a swanky restaurant - before throwing a drink and drug-crazed tantrum after snorting cocaine during their night out.

Back at their hotel in Manchester city centre, Gaunt claimed fellows guests were discriminating against him ''because he was white'' - then he attacked the mother of his two children in their room when she was said she was leaving.

During the assault Gaunt grabbed the victim around the throat with both hands shouting: “you’re not going, you sl*g” then chased her down the corridor as she tried to flee.

After the 15 minute beating, Gaunt eventually fled in a lift and was arrested outside the hotel after he was followed by security staff.

Police found blood spattered over the walls of the corridor and in the lift and an empty snap-bag containing cocaine belonging to Gaunt was found in the couple's hotel room.

Gaunt also had previous convictions for harassment against the victim.

A prison spokesperson also confirmed that Gaunt's death is not believed to have been coronavirus related.
