Dad whips son, 3, dozens of times with extension cord before abandoning him

A father was caught brutally attacking his toddler son in a car park - before abandoning the child alone in the car.

The dad left the boy while he went shopping in a nearby supermarket with the child's mother and their other three children.

Robert Lee Slocum turned himself into Columbus Police after the disturbing footage was released.

In it he is seen first shouting at his young son, who is wearing a red t-shirt and shorts, before striking him repeatedly with a white extension cord for around a minute.

The 27-year-old can be seen holding on to the defenceless tot, who is squirming and kicking his legs as he is hit more than 35 times.

Detective Andre Edwards confirmed that Slocum had been arrested and charged.

He said: "He saw the video yesterday and decided that he wanted to turn himself in which he did this morning through a local church … the children are safe which is first and foremost.

“[Slocum] saw the video and admitted it was very disturbing … he did appear to be extremely remorseful."

“[Slocum used] some type of a cord and it looks like it’s to bare skin.

"The force that was used, it’s almost unacceptable. I don’t know what the kid could have done. It’s excessive."

The detective added that he was grateful for the public's response with many calling in to identify the family involved.

He added: "The fact that so many people called in so rapidly, it was incredible. “I couldn’t have asked for a quicker response.”

Slocum has been charged with assault, domestic violence, and child endangering.

He is currently being held at the Franklin County Jail.
