Dad-to-be says mum hates baby's name and thinks it could only 'suit a horse'

A dad-to-be has asked for advice after his mum revealed she hates the name he has chosen for his future baby - and that it could only suit a horse.

The unnamed father said he is in the process of adopting a child with his wife and unveiled their idea to their family.

But the gran-to-be "freaked out" over the selected name - and ended up making a scathing comment that left her son's wife in floods of tears.

The dad, who admitted he is a self-confessed 'philosophy and mythology nerd' said their chosen baby name is Nikiforos.

The name - which means "Bringer of Victory" in Ancient Greek mythology - ended up sparking a rift.

Taking to Reddit, he said:  "I want to preface this by saying that I have always had an interest in philosophy and mythology. I am literally a name nerd.

"Since my wife and I are currently in the process of adopting, we have been talking about this a lot.

"When we broke the news to my parents, they were so happy for us. But last weekend, they asked if we have a name in mind... This is where the trouble began.

"When I first read the name Nikiforos one and a half years ago, I knew it would be that of my future child. My mother freaked out and said she might name a horse that, but not a child."

He claims he and his wife were very upset by the comparison and were even more distraught when the mum began to "imitate horse sounds and stomped up and down the stairs".

The man went on to say that they suggested a French spelling and pronunciation for the name in the hopes it might sway the mother, but it did little to help.

"We brought this up, hoping the reaction would be better," he added.

"Mother then asked if the entire discussion was just a prank. My wife started crying at this point.

"My mother seemed annoyed and asked to see the rest of our name list. She said none of them fit our last name."

More than 1,000 people responded to the post with many thinking the man was an a**hole for his unique name choice.

One person replied: "I'll probably get downvoted for this, but you and your wife are the a**holes.

"As an elementary school teacher, your wife should especially know how brutal kids are to each other.

"With a name like Nikiforos, you're pretty much signing your kid up for constant teasing throughout school.

"Sure, it wasn't nice for your parents to mock you guys if you're serious about the name, because like you said, you're entitled to pick the name of your child.

"But that doesn't mean you aren't an asshole if you give them a name that they will definitely get made fun of for."

Someone else said: "If the adult who willingly is choosing this name is in tears over some heavy handed criticism, why do they expect a child to embrace it?"

A third added: "My parents gave me a “unique” name and it’s still less “unique” than either of those.

"But people can’t spell or pronounce my name and there’s no way they’ll be able to spell or pronounce those options. The poor kid will get made fun of."
