Dad talks of 'final lunch' with son before he took his own life at Bristol University

A bereaved dad has described his 'final lunch' with his son before the student took his own life.

During an interview with Channel 4 News on June 13, James Murray said he had no knowledge of son Ben's mental health problems and the university had not shared information it had.

The 19-year-old fell to his death after being told he lost his place on his humanities course at Bristol University.

Ben Murray was the 10th student to take their own life at the university in an 18-month period.

During tonight's interview, James said: "I don't think any parent should have to go into a final lunch, like the one I went into, not knowing that your son is being managed out of the university, not knowing that your son is showing signs of mental illness to the university."

Since Ben's death, the university has launched an opt-in systems which allows officials to contact parents if they are worried about the student.

It has been used around ten times and 95 per cent of students have signed up to the system, according to Channel 4 News.

What can you do if you feel you are in crisis?

Most people who are thinking of taking their own life have shown warning signs beforehand.

These can include becoming depressed, showing sudden changes in behaviour, talking about wanting to die and feelings of hopelessness.

These feelings do improve and can be treated.
