Dad sues daughter's school for £724,000 after teachers cut her hair to 'even it out'

A US father is suing his daughter's school for $1 million (£724,000) after teachers cut her hair without parental permission.

Jimmy Hoffmeyer said in April his seven-year-old mixed-race daughter Jurnee came home from Ganiard Elementary School in Michigan one day with half her hair chopped off, after a student cut it on the school bus.

He took her to a professional salon the same day to get it professionally styled, but says two days later she came home with the rest of it cut off.

Mr Hoffmeyer said he thought another child had done it but Jurnee told him it was a teacher who had done it to "even it out".

Mr Hoffmeyer has claimed in his lawsuit that the constitutional rights of his daughter have been violated.

An investigation by the school district in July found that while the teacher had broken school policy she had not acted with racial bias.

MLive.com reports the lawsuit has been filed in a federal court in west Michigan against Mount Pleasant Public Schools and two teaching staff.

The lawsuit also alleges racial discrimination, ethnic intimidation, intentional infliction of emotional distress and assault and battery.

It claims the district "failed to properly train, monitor, direct, discipline, and supervise their employees and knew or should have known that the employees would engage in the complained of behavior given the improper training, customs, procedures, and policies, and the lack of discipline that existed for employees."

No formal response has yet been filed by the defendants and there has been no public comment from the school district.
