Dad stunned as old Harry Potter book is set to scoop £30k at auction

A rare Harry Potter first edition which narrowly avoided being dropped in the bath could fetch up to £30,000 at auction.

The hardback copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by JK Rowling had been sitting on a bookshelf for two decades when its owner decided to get it valued.

And the dad was left stunned after discovering the book he was given as a present in 1997 was a first edition of just 500 copies.

Incredibly, it managed to avoid being soaked and ruined as his two kids, then four and seven, enjoyed reading it in the bath.

The seller, a 68-year-old retired civil servant who lives near London, said: “As it turns out, it is the most valuable present we have ever been given.”
