Dad struck ex-partner in face then cowered under bed in cocaine-fuelled attack

A dad hit his former partner in the face in a cocaine -fuelled attack before hiding under bed sheets when she contacted the police.

Christoper Halewood, aged 39, showed up at the home of his ex-partner, who has not been named, and assaulted her, after taking cocaine and going to her address even though he was prohibited from doing so.

The assault saw Halewood punch his victim in the face and drag her around the hallway by her hair before trying to hurl an empty vodka bottle and iron at her, as reported by Liverpool Echo.

A judge described the dad-of-four as a coward and bully at Liverpool Crown Court on January 10.

Prosecutor, Sarah Griffin, said that Halewood had been invited to his ex-partner's house in July after being released from prison following a conviction for sending her threatening messages and carrying a bladed weapon.

She had been granted a restraining order against him but invited him to the home after one of their children said she wanted him to be at a family celebration.

That visit passed without incident but Halewood showed up again the next morning.

High on cocaine, he punched his ex in the face and then grabbed her by the hair and dragged her around the hallway.

Halewood then followed the woman upstairs as she tried to flee, running into her bedroom and throwing an iron and a vodka bottle at her.

At this point the woman managed to get away from him and call her mother.

After hearing the conversation, in which the women agreed they would call the police, Halewood hid under sheets in her bedroom before calling a taxi and leaving.

He later tried to contact her by text and phone call on two more occasions.

Peter White, defending, said there was little that could be said to mitigate the assault but said the breaches of the restraining order on the other occasions were driven largely by a deep desire from Halewood to see the three children he shares with his ex.

He appealed to the judge to pass a sentence that could be suspended, pointing to notes from probation officers who said they would be able to work with him and the fact he has not offended since August.

Despite this, Mr White said: “He is no fool your honour. He has brought his bag today. I can only ask the court to give him this one chance.”

But the judge, Recorder Ian Harris, said custody was the only option for Halewood, who has a slew of previous convictions for drink, drug and vehicle offences stretching back to 2005.

Addressing the assault, Recorder Harris said Halewood had shown his true colours in his reaction to his ex’s phone call to her mother.

He said: “You heard the conversation and, like the bully and coward that you are, you tried to hide and then fled the house using a taxi to leave the scene.”

Recorder Harris said it was important to jail the 39-year-old to protect the public and deter offenders, especially given Halewood’s apparent failure to improve his behaviour after his last conviction.

He said: “It seems your previous sentence and post custodial supervision taught you nothing about the way to behave.”

Halewood, of Roseside Drive, Netherley was jailed for 30 months after being found guilty of assault and admitting four counts of breach of a restraining order.
