Dad slammed after demanding teen babysitter pay for guitar his child broke while in her care

A dad has been blasted for demanding his teenaged babysitter fork out £1,500 to replace a guitar his own child broke while she was in her care

The dad was labelled an 'a**hole' after his young daughter pulled his prized guitar off the wall while the 19-year-old babysitter was looking after her.

The man said that he and his wife have hired the same sitter previously and called on her for help when they both had to work.

He says the sitter knows the house rules which insist that the child is not allowed in any rooms in the house other than the living room and playroom.

But while the babysitter was in charge, his young daughter managed to wreck his guitar and he now wants the babysitter to pay for a replacement, reports The Mirror

The dad said: "The babysitter I guess had an emergency herself and had to be on the phone for 20 minutes. For some reason, she decided to take the call outside, her rationale was it was private and didn't want our child to listen in."

The dad claims while the sitter was on the phone, the child used the sofa to climb over a baby gate, toddled down to the basement and managed to pull one off the guitars off the wall.

But rather than asking the babysitter to pay for the repair, he is demanding she replace the instrument completely at a cost of £1,575 ($2,200), claiming fixing the guitar would "severely impact its value".

Posting on Reddit, he said: "Am I the a**hole here? Or is she? Her parents are telling us we're responsible, she's offering only to have babysat for free, our friends are saying we're too harsh, but it was her responsibility, right?"

But readers thought the dad was being too harsh.

One said: "You're the a**hole. Your kid could damage it while you’re home and there's no babysitter, too. What are you gonna do - take it out of her future pay checks when she’s old enough to start earning? Child-proof your house or accept the risks, geez."

A second said: "Your stuff, your kid, your problem. You should have insurance for the guitar if it's so valuable and you should have it somewhere your kid can't get to. It wasn't great that she took the phone call outside, but there's always a moment when you blink or go to the bathroom and kids get into shit and you should know that."

But others were on his side, some even doubting the babysitter's story and saying the child should not have been left alone for 20 minutes.

One said: "Most likely explanation is the sitter didn't shut the gate when she left the room. The sitter is supposed to be supervising the child."
