Dad's warning after son sank in mud 'up to his chest' near duck pond at Heaton Park

A dad is urging families to take extra care in Heaton Park after his son sank in mud 'up to his chest' near a duck pond.

Nathan Weissbraun claims his 11-year-old son sank 'instantly' in the marsh when out for a walk with his mum and grandmother on Monday.

Mr Weissbraun, 34, said the situation could have been far more serious had two men not rushed to help the boy.

"They were walking by an old pond and my son wandered over to look at the ducks," he said.

"He started sinking in the mud. He was going down and down until it was up to his waist.

"Luckily two men were walking nearby and they came to their rescue and pulled him out.

"The problem is there are no signs or anything to warn people about the marsh. It happened instantly.

"In different circumstances it could have been very story."

Mr Weissbraun said his son, who he has asked not to be named, was a 'little shocked' when the incident happened on Monday afternioon.

The dad, from Prestwich, has contacted staff at Heaton Park to report the problem.

"I think there should be a sign or something there," he added.

"It's important that people are aware of it."

The Manchester Evening News spoke to a member of staff at Heaton Park.

They confirmed they had spoken to Mr Weissbraun and had passed his concerns onto management.
