A dad watched in horror as two 'buyers' test driving his car suddenly sped off with his son still in the backseat.
The Australian man told the ABC he was scared for the boy's life - but his five-year-old son later told him he thought it was "fun."
South Australia Police called the incident a "bizarre theft," describing how the suspects responded to the dad's car sale listing on Gumtree .
The force said a man and woman turned up at the 30-year-old man's Adelaide home and asked to test-drive the vehicle on Tuesday night, local time.
The dad agreed and sat in the front-seat of the car with them with his son in the backseat, while the woman drove.
After they returned to the house, the pair then asked if they could switch drivers.
According to police, as the dad got out of the car to move into the front passenger's seat, the male suspect took the wheel and sped off with the seller's son still in the back.
The dad immediately called police and rushed into another car to pursue them.
He drove for about 200-300 metres and found his son standing on the side of the road unharmed.
The dad, who did not want to be identified, told the ABC he had been scared for his life - but his son did not appear to have been scarred by the incident.
"He thought it was just fun or a joke, maybe because he's little and doesn't understand."
SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens told Australian media the couple's behaviour was "a disgrace".
"It's very concerning and I think it goes to the nature of the people involved that they have no regard for the welfare of [the] child or the parents."
Police are searching for the stolen blue Subaru WRX and the two suspects, described as as a bald, tattooed caucasian man, and a blonde woman wearing a white jumper.
