Dad's heartbreak after schoolboy and mum die within months of each other

A dad today paid tribute to his 16-year-old son on the first anniversary of his death after suffering an apparent allergic reaction to a takeaway meal.

Nick Kelly fell seriously ill after he bought and ate a doner meat kebab from Uno Pizza in Prescot in March last year.

The teenager, who had a nut allergy, suffered an anaphylactic shock which led to two massive heart attacks from which he tragically didn't recover.

Today, Merseyside Police, who are running a joint investigation with environmental health officials at Knowsley Council, said enquires remained ongoing.

Dad Chris was hit by a second tragedy when his partner Kim - Nick's mum - died suddenly last September, six months after losing her son.

The 36-year-old was found to have a serious bleed on her brain and later died, before it was also found she had undiagnosed leukaemia.

This afternoon, Chris told the ECHO: "It's been a terrible year, first losing Nick, and then Kim.

"It's left me feeling here, there and everywhere, so up and down.

"I've three other children, who are 18, 14 and 12, so I've just got to put my head down and carry on."

The 45-year-old added: "We lost our son, best friend and brother which we can never get back."

Addressing Nick directly, he said: "My life has never been right since you were taken from us at such a young age.

"The house is not right without you and your brother fighting or arguing over how long the other one has on the (computer) game, miss you asking for money to go and see Paisley.

"You will always be in our hearts and minds forever, Nicholas, love you forever and always.

"Tell mum we all miss her so so so much, give her a big kiss and hug from us all till we meet again, my son."

Chris said he was very keen to get answers as to how the teenager died and exactly what led to him falling fatally ill.

The dad-of-four has previously described his son as a "cheeky little monkey, who liked Liverpool FC, playing football and games on his PS4 console.

He added: "Everybody loved Nick.

"There wasn't a bad bone in him, he'd do anything for anyone."

In a statement issued following Nick's death, the takeaway outlet said: “Firstly, we would like to express our sincere condolences to the family at this difficult time.

“The teenager, Nick Kelly, was a regular customer attending the shop two to three times per week, ordering a similar dish each time – doner meat with mayonnaise or small chips.

“On Saturday, March, 7, 2020 between the approximate times of 10.30-11pm, Nick Kelly approached a member of our team outside the shop and ordered a portion of doner meat with mayonnaise.

“This meal was provided as ordered, and Nick Kelly proceeded to eat the dish whilst outside the shop.”
