A line-up of Dad’s Army, MasterChef and the Christmas edition of University Challenge helped BBC2 to a rare trumping of ITV through almost all of peak-time viewing on Tuesday evening.

This was preceded by MasterChef: The Professionals which managed 3.3 million and a 15.6% share between 8pm and 9pm.

Christmas University Challenge drew a healthy average of 2.5 million and an 11.9% share between 7.30pm and 8pm.

The line-up bested ITV which aired Tonight special Lonely this Christmas at 7.30pm, which drew 2.3 million and an 11% share.

And Midsomer Murders, which aired from 8pm to 10pm, drawing an average of 2.3 million and a 10.7% share.
