Dad reveals poignant tattoo of son he claims was killed in RAF initiation ritual

A father has revealed a poignant memorial tattoo to the son he believes was killed in an RAF initiation ritual.

Charlie Fleeting and wife Susan are convinced son Robert was murdered on base by fellow airmen who covered up his death.

The tattoo shows Charlie kneeling at Robert’s grave, with the message “sleep well son” and the dates of his birth and death.

Charlie, a former soldier, said: “Every time l look at it I know Robert is always with me and will never be forgotten.

“When people ask about it, it gives me a chance to tell my son’s story. It is a reminder of the great son we lost and why we fight for the truth.”

An inquest in 2012 ruled that Robert, 24, of East Kilbride , was struggling with his sexuality and took his own life at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire in 2011 after consensual sex with a man.

But Charlie, 52, and wife Susan, 53, continue to campaign for an investigation, and were devastated last month to be denied Legal Aid.

The couple believe there is an epidemic of bullying across the Armed Forces and their son’s case is “the tip of the iceberg”.
