Dad plunges 20 metres to his death on hike in front of horrified daughters

A dad plunged to his death in front of his horrified daughters while hiking near picturesque waterfalls.

The 79-year-old was walking with his two daughters when he slipped and fell.

One daughter frantically clambered down the cliff to try and save him, but he sadly died from his injuries.

The woman had to be winched to safety by a rescue helicopter.

The tragic incident happed at Purling Brook Falls in Springbrook, near Australia's Gold Coast.

The man was reportedly on holiday in Queensland from Victoria, visiting one of his daughters.

A spokesperson from Queensland Police told Daily Mail Australia: "Crews located the man at the bottom of the cliff and he was declared deceased a short time later."

One witness told 9News: "It was very sad, we saw one of the family members on the way back up and she looked distraught."

The hiking trail the three took is known to be dangerous with the local government website warning: "DANGER: Sheer cliffs and waterfalls.

"One slip could be fatal—serious injury or death may result from walking near the edge.

"Keep to the track. Supervise children closely."
