Dad of young pregnant woman attacked by 'monster' boyfriend 'disgusted by lenient sentence'

The dad of a young pregnant woman battered by her drug dealing boyfriend - who also left his ex to die - today said he was "disgusted" by his short 20 month sentence.

Alan Nolan was locked up this morning for the beating he handed out to 20-year-old Bethany Wainwright, placing his foot on her stomach, and threatening to "spoon out" his unborn child.

Just a few weeks before the vicious attack at his Kirkby flat, last November, the 23-year-old had narrowly avoided jail for drug dealing after the tragic death of 19-year-old Georgia Cassidy.

The teen had swallowed Nolan's cocaine wraps, which later tore open inside her, when he'd been pulled over by police. Within hours, the Class A drugs had killed her.

Today, relatives of Miss Wainwright said the daughter had "a lucky escape," but added that Nolan had been given a lenient sentence.

The reason for that was Nolan had been charged with common assault, which has a maximum sentence of six months, rather than the offence of causing actual bodily harm which has a top limit of five years.

Judge David Aubrey, QC, suggested his hands had been tied, today, and angrily demanded answers from the Crown Prosecution Service about the decision.

Dad Kevin Wainwright told the ECHO: "He should have got up to five years for what he did to Bethany.

"He's got off very lightly.

"If we can appeal, we'd be interested in that.

"It's like the gods are looking down on him, one girl's been killed by his drugs and my daughter was lucky to get away from him in this instance.

"She's had a very lucky escape.

"She could have been his next victim...how far does he need to get pushed? How far does he go to manipulate people?"

Nolan flew into a rage after phoning Miss Wainwright, at 1am, demanding a lift home from the city centre with his friends, which the eight-week pregnant woman refused.

Later, the incensed brute grabbed his partner by the throat, in the communal area of his flat, and pinned her up against the wall, leaving her terrified.

Bully Nolan chased her outside to the car where she locked herself inside, before opening the door and grabbing her out by her hair, which was torn off in clumps.

Mr Wainwright, 52, from Kirkby, added: "We don't want any contact with them [the Nolan family], just want our daughter to be away from him, to try and move on.

"It was bad what he did to her. Have you seen the patches in her hair where he pulled it out?

"People like that aren't nice for society...

"While my daughter was with him, she always had no money and he was always creaming off her.

"We were trying to get them apart, and we didn't know at first about the Georgia Cassidy incident.

"Bethany told us what happened to Georgia wasn't his fault, to give him a chance, and making all kinds of excuses.

"That's how love-struck she was with him.

"Georgia took his drugs, and that has cost that poor girl her life."

After the unprovoked attack, one of the boyfriend's family sent a chilling text to Miss Wainwright, warning her "not to mess with the Nolans".

The 20-year-old's ordeal only ended when the Kirkby man, of Roughwood Drive, began to sob and screamed at his girlfriend to "get out" of the flat.

Last October, Nolan had been handed a "last chance" 18-month suspended sentence for possession with intent to supply of Class A drugs. He was not charged specifically relating to his then-girlfriend's death.

He was slammed for only taking his partner of four years to Aintree hospital an hour later, after first calling two friends.

Instead of rushing to get Georgia immediate medical attention, Nolan called two friends and they met at the The Punchbowl pub car park in Sefton Village.

When finally arriving at hospital, Georgia was not breathing, in cardiac arrest and never regained consciousness, meaning her family had to switch off her life support machine.

Yesterday, the ECHO revealed photos of the heavy bruising sustained by Miss Wainwright, who described him as a "monster" and who still "terrified her."

Mr Wainwright said: "The judge has done the best he can. He should have got a lot longer.

"It wasn't common assault, this was actually abuse, he actually hit her, he battered her, it could have been GBH.

"I'm disgusted.

"Bethany is shocked, her whole life has been turned upside down. She's been through a lot...

"Bethany was all lushed up[with Nolan], she thought no different.

"She now realises what he out her through, but she couldn't see it for herself at the time.

"She's safe now he's off the streets.

"He's a bully."

Judge Aubrey slammed his lawyer's claims that Nolan had twice attempted suicide and was "grief-stricken" by the death of Miss Cassidy.

He told a stoney-faced lout: "I have come to the conclusion that you are callous and uncaring, only concerned about yourself."

The ECHO has approached the Crown Prosecution Service to respond to Judge Aubrey's complaints.
