Dad of Waterford acid attack victim says he will not stop fighting for justice

The dad of a teenage acid attack victim said he will not stop fighting to get justice for his son.

Oisin Killilea Daly was one of the three victims and suffered bad burns across his back during an attack in Waterford in April.

But there is outrage that the Director of Public Prosecutions has decided not to bring charges against four teenagers who were being considered for prosecution.

Relatives of the victims were contacted on Tuesday by Gardai who said that charges would not be laid.

Four young males, one minor, two aged 18 and one aged 19, were arrested after the attack at Earlscourt Housing Estate in Waterford.

Oisin’s father Martin Killilea told RTE's Liveline: “Eight months later, I get a phone call from a local garda saying no prosecution.

“This is why I’m going public, this is madness.

“I’m not going to give up, if I’ve to go fight for them, I’ll fight for them.

“It’s not over for me anyway, definitely not.

Mr Killilea said his son suffered “third-degree burns on his back, burnt through his jacket, his jumper, his T-shirt. He still has scarring now; I presume at this point he will probably have scarring for life.

“That’s just physically, never mind the emotional part of all this.”

He also said it was wrong to refer to an acid attack as "juvenile" behaviour.

Also speaking on the show was Christie Agberhiere, mother of talented footballer Tega and Shirley Sullivan, mother of hurling star Padraig.

Padraig has had three skin grafts on his legs since the attack and will not be able to return to hurling for two years.

Speaking of the decision for the DPP not to push charges, she said: “It’s been a hard year for Padraig and the boys, and now two weeks before Christmas.

“He had three skin grafts.

“My child is on the hurling pitch since he was four years of age. And then for someone to think they can throw this on him and ruin his whole career.

“I’m worried that this sends out the wrong signal to children, do this and this will happen - it’s not right.”

Tega suffered acid burns on his head and face and is still attending hospital.

The brave youngster, who played football for Waterford FC, completed his Leaving Certificate while undergoing treatment.

His mum, Christie, said: “His life has been destroyed... this is for a lifetime, for him and for me and the rest of the family."
