Dad of former Newcastle United winger blasts VAR after West Ham penalty decision

The father of a former Magpies midfielder has taken to social media to criticise VAR after West Ham were awarded a soft penalty decision in the second-half.

Jacob Murphy was adjudged to have fouled Pablo Fornals by referee Martin Atkinson just after the hour mark.

In real time, the decision looked to be correct. But, upon closer analysis it showed that the Magpies wing-back clearly got to ball before his Hammers counterpart.

The decision will no doubt frustrated Newcastle fans, with the decision coming just days after the Premier League announced changes to the VAR system and cited a 'lighter touch.'

With the game level after an hour, it proved a decisive moment as the Hammers took the lead from the resulting spot kick.

Troy Townsend - the father of former Newcastle United winger Andros - has criticised the decision after fans were told to expect a significant improvement this season.

He tweeted: "We were told that VAR and the decisions around it were going to be significantly better this season."

Freddie Woodman got down to deny Michael Antonio from the spot but Tomas Soucek bundled home the rebound to put the Hammers in front.

Antonio then got West Ham's fourth of the afternoon to ensure David Moyes' side took all three points from St. James' Park.
