Dad of baby found next to body of Glasgow asylum seeker Mercy Baguma in Home Office legal threat

The dad of a baby who lay for up to five days near the body of his mum claims they were failed by asylum officials.

Eric Nnanna says Home Office contractor Mears should have realised something was wrong when Mercy Baguma, 34, did not complete her planned move to another flat in Glasgow on August 19.

He raised the alarm after there was no answer at her Govan home and their 18-month-old son Adriel was found in his cot on August 22.

Mercy Baguma died of alcohol poisoning (UGC)

Mercy had died of alcohol poisoning.

Now Eric is considering a claim for damages in a case he hopes will reveal the truth.

Adriel is now living with engineering student Eric, who said: “I hope this investigation helps provide answers, so we can at least understand why things went wrong, that way no one else will need to experience what we have.”

It is not known whether Mears contacted Mercy, from Uganda, in the week of her death.

Kim Leslie, of Digby Brown Solicitors, said: “Should there be evidence of negligence, neglect or a failure to act, we will see to it he accesses justice.”

The Home Office and Mears Group were approached for comment.
