Dad marches out sweet shop with young daughter over explicit display at till

A dad has reported that he was forced to leave a sweet shop with his young daughter after noticing a display of explicit confectionary he "didn't expect in somewhere you'd take children."

The parent, who does not want to be named, visited the Kingdom of Sweets chain, but states that he found the range of adult-themed sweets next to the checkout desk to be "inappropriate" and more suited to a store like Ann Summers.

He claims that the products on sale in view of anyone who took a wander into the shop in Cardiff included candy cuffs and penis-shaped sweets with names referring to sexual acts, with Kingdom of Sweets saying that they have now removed them.

The Mirror reports that the father, who says his daughter had been saving up money to visit the sweet shop as a treat, said: "I'm not prudish at all but I didn't expect that in somewhere where you'd take children.

"On the high street in the capital city it's not on. Maybe in a distinctly adults-only section, tucked away somewhere, but no – it was right next to the till.

"My daughter went: 'I know what that is' because she's 10. We've spoken to her about certain things, she's not completely naïve, but I just don't think that should be put in front of children on the high street in the middle of Cardiff.

"I don't think that's appropriate to be in front of children – penis-shaped sweets – really.

"It goes from a sort of innocent place where they sell Oreos and chocolate bars and stuff to something that I don't think should be in that kind of environment or maybe tucked away where only adults can go."

The dad has since emailed Kingdom of Sweet to complain, but says he is yet to receive a response from the company.

After spotting the display, the dad decided to leave the shop without buying anything and added: "It's a real treat and it spoilt it for us really badly.

"We went to the castle and for some food and to go to Kingdom of Sweets was to top it off as a real treat," he said.

A spokesman for Kingdom of Sweets said: "We thank you for bringing this to our attention. The items have been withdrawn from stock."
