Dad killed when he stepped out in front of motorbike

A dad-of-one was hit by a motorbike after stepping out onto a pelican crossing when the pedestrian sign had turned red.

An inquest heard Kevin McPadden, 36, suffered massive head injuries in the collision with the powerful red and white 250cc Honda motorbike.

The accident happened at the junction of County Road and St Kevin's Drive in Kirkby days before Christmas 2016.

Mr McPadden, a glazer from Tower Hill, was taken to Aintree hospital in Fazakerley but could not be saved.

The motorcyclist and the pillion passenger were also seriously injured as a result of the collision on the afternoon of December 20, 2016.

Giving evidence at an inquest held at St Helens town hall, PC David Fitzsimon said there was conflicting evidence from witnesses at the scene as to the type of bike involved, and the speed at which it was travelling when the crash happened.

He said: "When the motorcycle was examined, it was found to be road legal with no defects that would have contributed to the collision.

"Visibility was good and as it was getting dark, the street lights were lit.

"Mr McPadden began crossing the road when the red man was displayed."

A post mortem revealed Mr McPadden died as a result of severe head injuries.

The assistant coroner for Knowsley, St Helens and Sefton, Johanna Thompson, concluded that Mr McPadden died as a result of a road traffic collision.

No family members were present at today's inquest.

Although two males were arrested following Mr McPadden's death, no charges were brought.

At the time of his death, Mr McPadden's family issued a tribute which said:  "Our beloved Kevin tragically passed away after a road traffic incident on 20th December 2016. The news of his untimely death has resonated through our home town of Kirkby.

"Kevin was a devoted father to his daughter, Chloe and two, step-sons Lennox and Harrison-Jake, who miss him dearly.

"We will remember him for the loving son, brother, father, uncle, friend and man that he was.

"Since his passing we have been overwhelmed by the compassion and the generosity of everyone who knew him and our family. We sincerely thank you from the bottom of our hearts."
