A Melbourne dad has been jailed for nine years for ditching his four-month-old son to buy booze, then getting drunk and fatally shaking him.

Cameron Staples left baby Flynn at home at Kilsyth on May 3, 2019, to pick up eight cans of bourbon and coke.

He returned, drank seven of them and some cider and inflicted horrific injuries on his defenceless son.

The 35-year-old was jailed in Victoria's Supreme Court on Thursday for a maximum of nine years.

He pleaded guilty to child homicide and must serve seven years before he can be considered for release on parole.

Staples initially lied about what happened to his partner who had gone out to the movies.

Robyn Hall returned home and found her baby boy moaning, with a bruise, his jaw clenched tight and limp in her arms.

Flynn died four days later in hospital.

Staples initially claimed the baby fell from the change table when he left the room to put a dirty nappy in the bin.

He later admitted he'd been drinking and too rough with Flynn, putting him down "pretty hard" on the floor, causing him to hit his head and go quiet.

Justice Paul Coghlan said no sentence he imposed could provide much consolation to Flynn's grief-stricken family.

"You knowingly told deliberate lies about what happened to Flynn," the judge said.

"You will have to live with the death of Flynn and the consequence to the other victims for the rest of your life."

Ms Hall earlier told the court the pain of losing her son was "like a fire burning inside of me".

"I devoted my life to Flynny and his father," she said in a statement.

"And then it was all gone. My whole world shattered that night.

"I don't want to be here without Flynny. I don't have a role anymore. What's the point?"

She could not understand how Staples could be so selfish and "hurt our perfect baby boy".

"Flynny didn't even get a chance at life."

Staples has been diagnosed with a personality disorder and found to have limited insight into his crime.

He's already spent 490 days behind bars awaiting sentence.
