Dad doing Christmas Eve run around Speke dressed as Santa to raise money for Claire House

A dad-of-three is doing a 20-mile run around Speke on Christmas Eve dressed as Santa to raise money for charity.

Tony Crone, who lives on Burnage Close, will embark on the fun run from 9am, stopping every few miles so people can take socially-distanced selfies with him as he spreads Christmas cheer through his community.

The 32-year-old, who has seven-year-old daughter Elizabeth, Andrew, 5, and Michael, 2, with wife Mel, will be raising money for Claire House Children's Hospice.

He told the ECHO: "It was a last-minute thing. I wanted to do something to make my three kids smile. It's been a tough year for them and lots of children.

"So I thought I'd get dressed up as Santa and run around the streets of Speke. Elizabeth loves the idea and offered to run for fun dressed as an elf."

Tony said that at the beginning of the year he made a resolution to get fit and decided 2020 was the year do it.

He added: "It's the only year I've made a resolution and kept it. I came up with the idea for a Santa Dash after joking with friends for a few years about it. I would always plan it way too late and then never do it.

"So I started to get fit and decided this is the year I should do it. I've already set myself some mad challenges.

"In October I cycled for a whole day - a total of 25 hours when the clocks went back for an indoor charity cycle for Alder Hey and Marie Curie. I also completed a marathon in November.

"I'm looking forward to raising money for Claire House with my Santa run and spreading some Christmas cheer."

Tony, a retirement living assistant, has plotted a 20-mile route around the main streets of Speke which he will run and his family will cycle part of the way to cheer him on.

He said: "I'll be stopping every couple of miles so people can take photos as I run past and if the kids are confused about my size, they can just say Santa has done Joe Wicks!"

Tony has set up a JustGiving page here, where you can donate to the fund and check out the route he will run on Christmas Eve.
