Dad dies week after discharge by doctors 'who thought he was too young to die'

A young dad died from a massive heart attack just one week after being discharged from hospital with medication, his wife says.

Tim Smith, 34, from Hull leaves behind a heartbroken wife, Zaskia, and daughters Chloe, eight, and Kyla, six, and phoned 999 just one week before he passed away complaining of chest pains.

It was one of a number of complaints he made in the months leading up to his death. His wife told Hull Live she was "beyond angry" that her husband did not get the treatment she claims could have saved his life.

Zaskia believes it was because doctors at Hull Royal Infirmary did not consider him for further investigations because of his age.

"I don't want anyone other babies to miss out on having their daddies because doctors didn't bother to pay attention to the signs," she said.

"We now have to figure out life without our rock, he was the foundation of our family and he's no longer there. They didn't give him the treatment that he needed."

Tim, who was general manager of Ciao Bistro in Hull, first had a mild heart attack in 2018 but was advised he did not need a stent, and was put on medication.

Then in February last year he had further pains and was diagnosed with angina and given a spray to use. But from April this year, the pain was much more regular and he saw his GP in May who gave him an indigestion remedy.

While visiting his mother in Hatfield later that month, he called 999 after suffering severe pain, but he was sent home after blood tests.

Earlier this month he saw a consultant at Castle Hill Hospital but, once again, he was sent home without any tests.

On June 11, he awoke at 4am in excruciating pain and his wife phoned 999 and he was rushed to Hull Royal Infirmary, but yet again, only blood tests were taken and he was discharged that same day.

"He said to me that he felt something big was about to happen to him, but he just didn't know when. He was scared," said Zaskia.

Exactly one week later, after taking his daughters to school, Tim went upstairs and collapsed on his bed after managing to shout 'Zas' to his wife.

"He came in and put the shopping bag down and went to the bathroom. I heard him shout 'Zas' which was the last thing he said. I ran upstairs and was ringing 999 on my phone.

"I did CPR until the ambulance came and they moved me out of the way while they worked on him for 45 minutes. But it was too much for his heart."

She said a post-mortem revealed he had heart disease and suffered a massive heart attack.

"I am so angry, I am beyond angry. Everyone always questioned his age when we spoke to them about his pains, they didn't take him seriously because of his age," she added.

A spokeswoman for Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said: "As Mr Smith passed away just a week ago, we have not yet been given the opportunity to review or investigate his care.

"We would welcome the opportunity to speak with members of his family and establish whether anything could or should have been done differently during his most recent visit to hospital.”
