Dad convicted of child cruelty

A father faces sentence after a jury found he hit and burned his daughters.

The 35-year-old defendant, who Bristol Live is not naming to protect the girls' identities, denied being cruel to them or assaulting his wife.

A jury at Bristol Crown Court found him guilty of the cruelty charges by a majority of 10-2.

It cleared him of assaulting his wife.

Judge Julian Lambert adjourned sentence, pending a report, until October 11 and gave the defendant bail.

Earlier Mark Worsley, prosecuting, said the wife made a 999 call for police to attend the family home on November 23 last year.

He said: "Police found (the wife) and her two children upset and in tears and fearful of the defendant.

"The defendant said no-one had called the police.

"But his wife said 'Please help me' and she said the defendant assaulted her."

The wife told police she married the defendant abroad in 2010 and initially didn't live with him.

After meeting for just five occasions, two resulted in pregnancy, the court heard.

The wife said she and the youngsters came to the UK to join the accused in 2018.

She claimed the defendant turned out to be an aggressive bully who would push and hit her as well as the girls.

The youngsters told police they suffered physical abuse at the hands of their father, and one described how her dad had burned her mouth and body with a heated spoon.

The children were examined and one had burn marks on the back of her right leg and on her right hip, as well as a mark on her arm.

The other child had pinch marks on her arm.

The wife was examined and found to have scratch marks on her right arm.
