Dad claims son, 4, left 'in tears' after being shouted at for cycling in Marlay park

A dad has claimed that his four-year-old son was left "in tears" after being shouted at for cycling in a south Dublin park.

The young boy, who had learned how to cycle only weeks earlier, was on his little 14 inch bike when he was shouted at by grown adults because there was a "no cycling" sign painted on the ground in Marlay Park.

According to IrishCycle.com, local resident Derek Mills claims the adults got "within a few feet" of the young boy and shouted at him for cycling at a distance from them.

Up until the incident, he had been cycling in the park without issue after he learnt how to pedal six weeks earlier.

Speaking to the publication, Mr Mills said: "I wouldn’t normally want the attention but this has infuriated me.

“I can no longer bring my one-year-old up on back of bike to see the wildlife too. The only area I can see its allowed is the service entrance which is shared with car drivers and service vehicles. It covers a very small and unsafe area of the park for young children cycling."

A representative of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council said the signs were not painted to deter young children and families but because of people cycling at speed.
