Dad blames Uber after daughter, 12, orders lift to car park to jump to her death

A grieving father is demanding answers after his 12-year-old daughter ordered an Uber to a car park where she jumped to her death.

Benita Diamond, from Orlando, Florida, was reportedly picked up by a driver despite the app's policy against transporting unaccompanied children.

The New York Post reports that the girl's father Ronald Diamond said she had taken her mum's phone to download the app then used a gift card she got for Christmas to pay for the ride.

Mr Diamond pointed the finger of blame at Uber for allowing the girl to be picked up late at night on January 10 while her parents were asleep and driven to the nine-storey building where she leapt from the top to her death.

He told media the family was now considering taking legal action.

He claimed: "If Uber had followed their policy, without a doubt, our daughter would still be here."

Benita's family said she had left a note saying she was "past the point of return."

Her dad told the conference: “Uber took my daughter past the point of no return. Nobody else did. We didn’t.”

In a statement to US media, an Uber spokesman said the incident was not reported in the last six months, but the company is investigating and will take appropriate action.

According to the rules published on Uber's website, a rider must be at least 18 years of age to have an Uber account to request rides.

It says: "Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by someone 18 years of age or older on any ride.

"As a driver-partner in a city that doesn't allow minors to ride, you should decline the ride request if you believe the person requesting the ride is under 18.

"When picking up riders, if you feel they are underage, you may request they provide a driver's licence or ID card for confirmation. If a rider is underage, please do not start the trip or allow them to ride."
