Dad battered in front of girlfriend and left with broken jaw in row over 60p

A dad-of-three was brutally attacked by a thug in front of his heavily pregnant girlfriend after refusing to give him 60p.

Chris Robson, 26, from Coventry, was walking towards a pub in Earlsdon, on April 2 with partner Sonia Richards, 30, when they were approached by a man asking them for 60p.

Sonia said no to the unknown man, who appeared homeless, but as they continued to walk they claim they were verbally abused by him and stopped to ask him what he had said.

The man then allegedly punched Chris five times in the body and head in a horrific attack, leaving him covered in blood and with a broken jaw.

Sonia said: "We were just walking to another bar when the man came out of nowhere. He asked us for money, but when said no, then he started shouting at us.

"We couldn't understand what he was saying, when Chris asked him the man just attacked.

"He hit him in his face and his body, but one very heavy hit ended with Chris smashing his head off the floor.

"I was so scared because Chris suffers from epilepsy and he could have had a fit.

"His mouth was full of blood and it had dripped down all of his clothes.

"I'm from Earlsdon, and now I don't feel like I can go there after this. The rise in knife crime is scary, and this could have easily been a knife, I'm just glad it wasn't.

Clutha helicopter crash pilot received low-fuel warnings before deadly accident

"I was terrified that Chris would have a fit, he passed out again and we put him in the recovery position.

"There was blood all over his clothes, and in his mouth. When we got home, my grandmother told us he needed to go to hospital as she thought his jaw was broken.

"We're just hoping Chris's jaw will be sorted soon and the thug who did this to him is caught."

The couple claim University Hospital Coventry, which Chris was rushed to, have rearranged an operation to fix his jaw three times - leaving him at home in agony.

Chris, who is originally from Newcastle, added: "I just don't feel safe going out anymore, I have never had my jaw snapped where I'm from.

"They're animals here, people get stabbed for nothing and I could have been killed.

"The hospital told me I would get my jaw fixed up on three separate occasions, but it keeps changing.

"They just gave me loads of medication and after waiting for a cancelled operation I just discharged myself.

"They've said my operation will happen this week [April 12] but I've lost all faith in them and will be going elsewhere."

West Midlands Police confirmed they were investigating the incident.  A spokesman said: "Police are investigating reports of an assault on Albany Road, Earlsdon shortly after 9pm on Tuesday (2 April).

"A man in his 20s and his friends were approached by another man asking him for money.

"He refused and the offender punched him in the face, resulting in a broken jaw, before he ran away."
